OurPATCH

Who is PATCH

We are a group of local residents who have joined together to call for calmer streets in our local area

We’d like our local streets to be organised so that walking and wheeling is a bit nicer. For instance, less through traffic, wider pavements, more trees and benches.

PATCH Qs

Healthy Neighbourhoods

Why do you want calmer streets?

We’d like walking and wheeling to be safer and more pleasant to make it a more appealing option for local journeys – trips to the shops, GP, school, park or church. We think that active travel – walking and wheeling – makes people feel good and has lots of health benefits.

Are you anti-car?

Some of us own them – so we’re certainly not against cars. But we’d like our residential streets to be organised around people who walk and wheel, not designed for the speed of cars cutting through the area.

I need to be able to drive to and from my house. Would you stop this?

There are lots of ways of reducing car traffic without stopping local people from driving to and from their homes. For instance, on the Holly Lodge Estate, drivers can park outside their homes, but because there is no through traffic, the roads are calm and pleasant for people on foot.

Would calmer streets mean ambulances take longer to get to (the Whittington) hospital?

There are no specific plans proposed just now, so this is difficult to answer. However, we think the streets could be calmer without slowing ambulances. For instance, schemes that use cameras rather physical gates will allow ambulances through. As there would be less traffic, ambulance might even arrive more quickly.

A new plan from Camden will probably not emerge until 2026. Here are some ideas that we’d like to see adopted.
